Beethoven wrote only one violin concerto, but his piece is singular in scope, vision, and majesty. Part of a year-long celebration of Beethoven250, the San Francisco Symphony presents the Beethoven Violin Concerto with the dazzling virtuosity of violinist Anne-Sophie Mutter—an artist-in-residence this season. Michael Tilson Thomas places this masterpiece side-by-side with other works from Beethoven’s adopted hometown of Vienna, including the hauntingly beautiful Unfinished Symphony by Franz Schubert (a composer who shouldered Beethoven’s casket in 1827); and Five Pieces for Orchestra, written a century after the Beethoven concerto by Vienna’s next musical revolutionary Arnold Schoenberg.
